We love all things travel and believe that travel should be easily accessible and welcoming to solo travelers. Right from day 1 we did everything we could to make sure we offered the best tours in Canada for solo travelers. From eliminating single supplements for solo travelers and making sure that our tours were structured in a way that was fun and inviting, we have worked hard to offer the best tours for solo travelers in Canada.

How Do We Offer The Best Tours For Solo Travelers In Canada?

Guaranteed Departures For Solo Travelers

While lots of travelers book group tours with clubs and groups of friends, solo travelers book tours alone which can make it tough to feel confident that your tour is going to fill and depart reliably. From our very first tour we committed to guaranteeing every departure we plan so that solo travelers can book our tours with confidence.

No Mandatory Single Supplements

That’s right! One of many things that help us offer the best tours for solo travel in Canada is that we scrapped single supplements right from the get go. If you are looking for a tour for solo travelers in Canada, you won’t have to pay for a single supplement on our tours. You can book double occupancy and we will pair you up with another solo traveler and if we have no one to pair you up with, the single room is our treat! If you prefer, you can always upgrade to a single room but this is totally optional.

A Welcoming Environment

It takes a lot of elements to come together for that magical feeling you get when a group really bonds. One of those things is a good guide who knows how and has a passion for bringing people together. We have lots of fun and low pressure group activities and conversations during our tours, like chatting about our favourite parts of the day around a camp fire. This helps the group open up and bond, which makes a really fun and memorable experience for everyone on the tour.

how to find a good tour for solo travelers?

There are many aspects of a tour and a tour company that can lead to a really good or really bad experience while traveling solo. Below are a few key things to ask and lookout for and what can make for a really positive solo travel experience.

Ratio of solo travelers vs couples, families and small groups

This is really important. There is nothing wore uncomfortable than joining a small group tour and finding out that the group is made up of 11 family members and yourself. A tour company that puts a tour like this together is probably desperate to cover their costs and filling tours inappropriately at the expense of your enjoyment.

You should be able to ask the company what is their typical ratio of solo travelers and even how many people are currently booked on a tour that are traveling solo. On Average, our tours are roughly 50%-70% solo travelers, which means that there should be at least 4-7 other solo travelers in your group, so you won’t need to stress about being the only solo guest on the tour.

Single Supplements- mandatory or optional?

Traveling is expensive, especially as a solo traveler, where little things like taxis, hotels etc can’t be split with another traveler. Taking a tour can already be an expensive option, but made much worse if you need to pay the full cost of a hotel room during your tour. Some companies charge a single supplement on their tours for solo travelers, which is essentially a fee for not having a partner to share the cost of your hotel room. With many companies this is a mandatory charge, to ensure that the company doesn’t get stuck with the bill for the second half of your room.

Other companies have taken this away and made the single room an optional upgrade. This way you can book double occupancy on your tour and be paired up with another traveler. You should check with the tour company you are booking your tour for solo travelers with and see if they only pair travelers of the same sex up, or anyone. It might not be safe or appropriate to be paired up with another solo traveler of the opposite sex.

We only pair travelers of the same sex up when they book double occupancy. Solo travelers can upgrade to their own single room if they desire, but this is never made mandatory. If there is no other traveler to pair them up with, the cost of the single room is on us!

Are Departures Guaranteed?

Most tour companies and travel operators confirm their tour departures when a minimum amount of people have booked the trip, so they know they won’t lose money. That’s great for them, but how does it work for you? You book a trip for next summer eight months in advance, plan each trip detail meticulously and book your airfare, hotels, and get approved for time off work. One month before take off you get an email saying your tour is cancelled. Now what?

We don’t think it’s fair to cancel tours so we guarantee each of our departures so you can be assured that when you book your trip with us you can rely on it to go ahead. Chances are it will be sold out, but even if it’s just you on the tour your vacation is locked in and as ready as you are.

Balance between free time and group activities

Another aspect of the best tours for solo travelers is how much of the tour is actually spent doing fun things in a group, and how often are you left on your own to figure things out. Perhaps you go on a guide group hike each day, then dropped off at your hotel to spend the next eight hours alone in the late afternoon and evening. That can be boring. It’s fun to have drinks as a group, bond about the memories from the day, even compare accents.

On our tours we hang together during the day, and although it is optional, the entire group typically goes out for dinner together and the guides join in too. This brings everyone together and leaves no one out. Lots of the memories from each tour are made around the dinner table and over a bottle of wine after all!

Choosing a tour as a solo traveler

The points listed above are all super important to make sure that you choose a tour that is suitable for solo travelers. Each company should be able to give you a rough ratio of solo travelers vs groups and couples. Average age can also be important, but not always. Our tours have a wide age range and we find that this gives them a really deep and unique feel; more like a family than a group of very similar people.

If you are having a hard time finding a good tour for solo travelers in Canada, feel free to reach out us and we can help. There are many tour companies that specialize in this, and some that have no idea, so being careful in your search is key.
