Fiordland National Park Tours

Fiordland National Park is one of the most incredible places on earth, and easily one of the top destinations in New Zealand. The towering peaks, sheer walls, lush forests and rushing rivers make for one of the most ecologically rich places to visit and one that should be part of every trip to New Zealand. Our adventure holidays in New Zealand feature guided tours of Fiordland National Park, where you get the full experience from the waterline to the alpine ridges too.

You’ll hike sections of New Zealand’s Great Walks, winding through mystical forests that feel straight out of a fairy tale, and walk along panoramic ridges, speckled with alpine lakes and surreal views of the surrounding peaks and deep valleys below. It’s hard not to feel like you’re in a scene from Lord of the Rings during a guided tour of Fiordland National Park, with so many recognizable landscapes from the films. Now it’s up to you to decide which character you embody… will you be a hobbit? Or perhaps a dwarf?!

Every Fiordland National Park tour that we offer features a boat tour of Milford Sound, which is the heart and soul of Fiordland. During this excursion you will come face to face with the towering walls and soaring peaks that are so famous, and if you are lucky, it will rain just enough to fill waterfalls that cascade down the sides of the cliffs.

We can’t wait to welcome you to Fiordland and help you discover the unforgettable landscapes and experiences on your guided national park tour. Contact us to start planning your New Zealand adventure holiday today!

Fiordland National Park Traveler Info

  • Fiordland is beautiful year-round, but November through April offers the best mix of milder temperatures, longer daylight hours, and lush rainforest scenery. December and February stand out as two of the best months to visit, with warmer weather, excellent hiking conditions, and long summer days. Rain is common in every season, but that is part of Fiordland’s magic, feeding its dramatic waterfalls, mossy forests, and misty mountain landscapes.

Here is a summary of the weather to expect in Fiordland National Park:

    • Warmest months: January–February (18°C highs)

    • Coolest months: June–August (10–11°C highs)

    • Driest period: Winter (June–August), though still very wet by most standards

    • Wettest months: January, May, October, and December

    • Best chance of sunshine: February and March

    • Best waterfalls: Any time after heavy rain (which is often!)

  • Reaching Fiordland is part of the adventure. Whether you're travelling independently or joining a guided tour, there are several convenient ways to explore New Zealand's largest national park and its famous fiords, including Milford Sound (Piopiotahi) and Doubtful Sound (Patea).

    By Road from Queenstown

Queenstown is the most popular gateway to Fiordland. The drive to Te Anau, the main hub for exploring the national park, takes approximately 2 hours. From Te Anau, the spectacular Milford Road continues another 118 km (about 2–3 hours) to Milford Sound, passing through alpine valleys, native rainforest, mirror-like lakes, and the famous Homer Tunnel. Many visitors choose to self-drive, allowing time to stop at viewpoints and short walks along the way.

    By Road from Christchurch

Travelers coming from Christchurch can either fly to Queenstown and continue from there, or enjoy a scenic South Island road trip. The drive to Fiordland typically takes 8–10 hours depending on your route and sightseeing stops, with many visitors breaking the journey in towns such as Lake Tekapo, Wanaka, Queenstown, or Te Anau. Coach services also connect Christchurch with Te Anau.

By Coach or Guided Day Tour

For those who prefer not to drive, numerous coach and sightseeing tours operate from Queenstown and Te Anau. These full-day excursions include transport, commentary from local guides, and often a Milford Sound cruise. Guided tours are an excellent way to experience Fiordland's scenery while relaxing and enjoying the journey.

    By Scenic Flight

One of the most spectacular ways to reach Fiordland is by air. Scenic flights depart from Queenstown and soar over the Southern Alps, glaciers, lakes, and remote valleys before landing at Milford Sound Airport. Many visitors combine a scenic flight with a Milford Sound cruise, returning to Queenstown in just a few hours while enjoying unforgettable aerial views of Fiordland's dramatic landscapes.

    By Cruise and Water Transfer

Doubtful Sound, Fiordland's largest and most remote fiord, is reached via a combination of boat and coach transfers. Visitors travel across Lake Manapouri by boat before crossing Wilmot Pass by coach to reach the fiord. This unique journey is often considered one of New Zealand's most scenic travel experiences.

    By Hiking

For adventurous travelers, Fiordland is home to several of New Zealand's Great Walks, including the famous Milford Track. Multi-day hiking trails provide a memorable way to experience the park's wilderness, waterfalls, mountains, and rainforest landscapes.

    Guided South Island Tour Packages

Many international visitors choose to visit Fiordland as part of a guided South Island tour. Multi-day itineraries departing from Christchurch or Queenstown often combine Fiordland park tours with highlights such as Aoraki / Mount Cook National Park, Queenstown, Lake Tekapo, and the West Coast glaciers. These tours offer a convenient, stress-free way to experience the South Island's most iconic scenery while leaving the driving and logistics to experienced local guides.

Tip: If your schedule allows, spend at least one night in Te Anau rather than visiting Fiordland as a day trip. You'll enjoy a more relaxed experience, fewer crowds, and extra time to explore the spectacular scenery along Milford Road.
