There are no poisonous animals to worry about.
The only notable hazards to keep in mind are activity specific, like slips and falls while in the mountains etc.
That being said, you should exercise a practical degree of caution like anywhere else in the world!

South Island South Half: From Christchurch head West to the West Coast, then South to Franz Josef and onward to Wanaka and Queenstown. Next visit Fiordland National Park, and then return North along the East side of the Island, passing Mount Cook on your return.
South Island North Half: From Christchurch, head north through the Inland Scenic Route to explore Arthurs Pass and Lewis Pass, then head up to Abel Tasman National Park and Nelson area. Pass Marlborough Sound and Kaikoura on your return towards Christchurch.
